After trying that place soon after they opened I refer to it as "Foody

I went there about 4-5 months ago, mid-afternoon. Good selection and still
fresh food out. Lots and lots of goodies.

Good to know. Like I said, when I tried it soon after opening it was
all battered crud and some very odd, definately not-Chinese things:
perogies, hamburger patties, hrm... can't recall what else but it seems
like they bought whatever was on sale.

That's the noon buffet, and it's not changed....

While quite edible, Foody Goody is to a Chinese buffet as McDonalds is to
a steak house.

How authentic are you looking for? For example, are you looking for
a Dim Sum buffet with real chicken feet? Are you looking for a Buddhist
vegetarian buffet? Shanghai style? Beijing style? Schezuan style?
Or by "Chinese" do you mean to include other oriental cuisines such
as Japanese or Thai?

The Palatal on Pembina is my absolute favorite food destination. Yes, it's
a buffet, and it'll rock your socks off - The appetizer buffet is an
assortment of Chinese-style food, and the entree buffet is a Mongolian
stirfry. There's also a small salad bar. It's all-you-can-eat, and in the
dozen or so times I've been there I've never been disappointed in the
quality of the food or the service.

"Your milage may vary"... it wasn't anything impressive at all the
three times I've been.

(I have very seldom been impressed by -any- Chinese restaurant
in Winnipeg.)

My recommendation: go to the Korean restaurant named "Right There",
at 472 Stradbrooke right near Osborne.

It's a "Mongolian BBQ", not Chinese. Yes, it does offer buffets.

Marigold? Good Eats? Maybe it was just a bad day, but the time I went
there it was some of the lowest quality Chinese food I've ever had.
Not even up to the standards of corner Chinese-slash-Canadian
take-out.

Marigold is the McD's of Chinese food, it's true.

You sure know your flied lice juan tonne...and yes it is
a real shame the quality has gone into the toilet.

At one time all the Marigolds, the Nanking, and a
place on the West side of Main about half a block north
of Portage (the name escapes me) were some of the best
places to eat in Manitoba. Golden Dragon had good take
out, but that was about it.

The Cathay House, Shabusen, Shangri-la, and China
Garden used to be good too but the food quality has gone
to hell.

Lately I've been going to Hung Garden by Kildonan place.
The food is very tasty there even if it it's very Canadian-ized,
in some vegetable ingredients and sauces, but the staff
is very friendly. Best of all I've yet to get any muddy tasting
or soggy shrimp in any dishes where they're used.

With all due respect Bill, if you sincerely mean that,
don't you think you should have said that to Walter
in a private email rather than in public.

Don't take that as a swipe against you Bill, because it isn't.

It's just that if you think he has some type of problem or
issues that need medication and/or psychological help it
somehow seems wrong to publicly make the approach
about it in that manner, i.e. because if does have a problem,
that's like throwing gas on a fire IMHO.

AFAIK Walters never attacked anyone, or been abusive,
although I'm sure that the odd time his comments or humour
may have gone right over the head of someone and they
have felt abused or offended.

I'm just saying he's usually respectful of others, and he
deserves no less in return from a class act like you.

Hmmm...I haven't conducted a survey and analysis of
what restaurant does what, but I've never encountered
a Chinese Food restaurant that didn't have take out. It
seems to be part and parcel of the specialty food
concept just like the Colonel and his buckets, or
pizza.

I'd be surprised if any type of restaurant didn't
have some form of "take-out" service even if it's just
putting the food on a paper plate and covering it with
tin foil, or wrapping the food in tin foil a la doggie bag.
IOW even if they don't specialize in take out service,
they'll do it since they are in the hospitality industry.

In fact I suspect that since the smoking ban started,
the restaurant industry has seen a growth in their
take out service.

"But I showed them. I had a lobotomy in the end."

But to answer your question:

For more than a decade, I mostly posted through my work account. As
it was a government account, I couldn't post messages praising any
particular business, as that could have led to complaints of
government favoritism or complaints that my bias had interfered or
was interfering with fair bid assessment. That I had nothing to do
with most bid assessment wouldn't matter.

It was marginally safer to post negative comments, at least on matters
within my technical specialty.

Overall, the situation led to the development of a mostly Just The Facts
style.

When I switched to mostly posting through a personal account, I started
evolving my style, but so far I haven't gotten too far beyond
Just The Sarcasm.

Errr...no thanks, posts about the effect of inverted bit rates
being modified by SQL and flat databases when subjected
to hierarchical structures injected from OLAP queries under
a Unix mainframe network environment are interesting and
informative but I find irritating the living shit out of some
shit for brains pompous assholes far more entertaining.

Oh gawd -- if Ken's is the best, then the rest are worse than I
suspected!

Ken's is less bad than some of the other ones I've tried.

Some people I know definitely prefer East Ocean (fairly close to Ken's);
I find it very plain... Ken's is at least better than that.

A Taste Of Asia, on Corydon, is "good" -- by comparison, provided
you are grading on a Bell Curve.

Chinese perogies? I know the Chinese invented spaghetti
then sent a bunch of people to Italy so they'd become
Italians, but you mean to say then invented perogies and
then sent a bunch of people to Transcona so they could
eat them every day?

I ate at a Chinese restaurant in Transcona once, and
ordered sweet and sour chicken balls. It wasn't until
I started eating them that I realized a rooster is a male
chicken.

Will be the first time to be there, stay for a few days. Are there any good
Chinese restaurants in town with buffet?
Thanks,
John
There are NO good Chinese buffets anywhere. Buffets just don't do
justice to most foods, and I've found that Oriental foods come out
probably the worst in a buffet setting.

There are a number of good Chinese places in town that probably work
out cheaper then a buffet, and serve far better food. Sum Hay is one
of my favorites...

And not to forget the decorative hooker that is normally on the corner!

Isn't that the truth! They have the best Hot & Sour soup I've ever tasted.

Just came back to take a look at the thread. Overwhelmed... Thanks all!

I prefer one with pure Chinese cuisine (Beijing style), but knowing that
somewhat Canadian-ized and Canton-ized are not avoidable.

Like most of us, clean dishes & spoons should be NO 1 criterion. it'd be
scary to see mice.

Mongo's Grill on Regent in the Crossroads shopping center in front of
wal-mart. Great food and friendly service. Good price too.

Probably in the strip that shares the Sal's with the Quizno's, right
beside Future Shop.

There are no good Chinese buffets, I like the Thai buffet at Sawatdee on
Osborne during the week. If you like dim sum, go to Kum Koon in Chinatown on
Sunday morning.
